MADONNA’S FOUNTAIN

The fountain on Dealului Street was built on the initiative of the magistrate of the Town of Sibiu and was built in 1905 in this square which appeared as a consequence of a curious way to parcel out the terrain. It was built near the northern descent of the planned citadel of Sibiu close to the Franciscan monastery.

The body of the fountain is made up of a belled basin with the upper part in stone exactly like the entire fountain and placed on the body of the fountain. In the middle of this basin the statue of a woman dressed according to the Roman fashion with a baby in her arms. In the original arrangement of the fountain and of the integrated statue the base started from a group of river stones and gave the impression the whole rises up out of stone, out of nature. This has on four of its sides little bays with the superior part with a semicilindrycal shape in which stone plates with inscriptions are fixed. The art critics consider the statue is a representation of Madonna and the Baby.
